Add text, shapes and images to a PDF page

Fill in a form, annotate a page or add a date without the source file. Everything is drawn in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

"Editing a PDF" means two very different things, and the gap between them is why so many people come away disappointed. Reflowing the original text — rewriting a paragraph and having the rest of the page adjust — is not really possible, because a PDF stores where each glyph sits rather than the paragraph it belongs to. That is a job for the source document.

What is entirely possible, and what people usually need, is adding to the page: writing into the blank space on a form, dating a document, striking through a clause, circling a figure, dropping a logo into a corner. This tool does that.

You place text, shapes and images wherever you want them, with control over size, colour and rotation, and export a normal PDF. It all happens in your browser, which matters because the documents people fill in are forms full of personal details.

Nothing is uploaded

The document and everything you add stay in the browser tab. Forms full of personal details never reach a server.

Text, shapes and images

Add typed text in the colour and size you want, draw shapes to highlight or strike through, and place images or logos.

The page underneath is untouched

Your additions are drawn on top. The existing text stays selectable and images keep their original quality.

How to edit a PDF

1

Open the PDF you want to add to.

2

Place text, shapes or images on the page.

3

Adjust size, colour, rotation and position.

4

Download the edited document.

The form you are filling in stays with you

The documents people complete on screen are forms: names, addresses, account numbers, dates of birth. All of it is typed and drawn inside your own browser, and none of it is transmitted anywhere.

When people reach for this

Filling in a form that is not fillable

A PDF form with no interactive fields — printed, scanned and sent as an image. Typing into the blank spaces is the only way to complete it without printing it out.

Dating and initialling a document

Agreements frequently need a date beside a signature, or initials in a margin. Adding them on screen keeps the document digital from start to finish.

Marking up a draft for review

Striking through a clause, circling a figure, adding a comment beside a paragraph. It is faster than writing a separate list of comments referring to page and line numbers.

Correcting a small error before sending

A wrong date or a misspelled name in an otherwise finished document whose source file you no longer have. Covering it and typing the correction is quicker than rebuilding the document.

What actually happens to your file

The page you see is rendered by pdf.js as a preview, and everything you place is tracked as an object with its own position, size, colour and rotation. Nothing touches the document while you are working — you are composing a set of instructions.

On export, the PDF is loaded with pdf-lib and your additions are applied. Text is drawn using one of the standard PDF fonts, in the variant matching the style you chose, with the colour converted into the red, green and blue components the PDF format expects. Images are embedded with the encoder matching their format, so PNG transparency is preserved.

Every object's coordinates are converted from the preview into PDF points against the page's own dimensions, with the vertical axis flipped — the PDF origin is at the bottom-left of the page, while the preview measures from the top-left. Rotations are applied as an angle in degrees on the drawing operation.

Each object is then drawn onto the page's existing content stream. That word — onto — is the important one. Your additions are layered over what was already there rather than replacing it, which is why the original text stays selectable and nothing gets re-rendered or degraded.

Where it falls short, honestly

  • You cannot edit the text that is already there. The existing words cannot be rewritten, reflowed or restyled, because a PDF stores positioned glyphs rather than editable paragraphs. You can cover text with a shape and type a replacement over it, but that is layering, not editing.
  • Covering text does not remove it. A white rectangle over a name hides it visually while the original characters remain in the file, recoverable by text extraction. Do not use this as redaction for anything confidential.
  • Only the standard PDF fonts are available, so you cannot match a distinctive typeface already used in the document.
  • It does not fill interactive AcroForm fields. Text is drawn onto the page rather than entered into a form field, so a document with real fillable fields is better completed in a reader that supports them.
  • Your additions are flattened onto the page on export. They are not editable annotation objects that can be moved or deleted later in another program.
  • Encrypted documents must be unlocked first, since the pages cannot be modified while the file is encrypted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the text that is already in the PDF?expand_more
No. A PDF records where each glyph sits, not the paragraph it belongs to, so the existing words cannot be rewritten or reflowed. You can cover text with a shape and type over it, which works visually, but it is layering rather than editing. To change the wording properly, edit the source document and re-export.
Can I use this to black out confidential information?expand_more
No, and this matters. Drawing a black rectangle over a name hides it on screen while the original text remains in the file and can be recovered by extracting the text. Proper redaction means removing the content, not covering it. To remove a whole page, use the remove pages tool.
Why can I not type into the form fields?expand_more
Text is drawn onto the page rather than entered into interactive fields. That is precisely what makes this useful for forms that have no fields at all — the scanned and printed kind. If your document does have real fillable fields, a reader that supports AcroForms will handle them better.
Does editing reduce the quality of the document?expand_more
No. Your additions are drawn on top of the existing content stream and nothing underneath is re-rendered. The original text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.
Can I move or delete my additions later?expand_more
Not after export. Everything is flattened onto the page when you download, so plan to keep your original file if you might need to revise. While you are still working, objects can be moved and removed freely.
Which fonts can I use?expand_more
The standard PDF fonts — Helvetica and Times, in regular, bold, italic and bold-italic. These are guaranteed to be present in every reader, so your text renders identically everywhere, but they will not match a custom typeface used elsewhere in the document.
Can I edit a password-protected PDF?expand_more
Not while it is encrypted. Use the unlock tool with the password first, then edit the decrypted copy.
