Add a text or image watermark to every page of a PDF

Stamp DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL or your own logo across a document, with control over angle, transparency and position. Runs in your browser.

A watermark is a label that travels with the document. Once a file leaves your hands it gets forwarded, printed and filed, and the context you sent it in — "this is only a draft" — does not travel with it. Writing that on the page itself is the only version of the message that survives.

This tool stamps text or an image across every page: a word like DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, a case reference, a recipient's name, or a logo. You control the angle, the transparency and where on the page it sits, so it reads clearly without making the document unusable.

It runs in your browser, which matters for the documents that most often need marking. Something worth stamping CONFIDENTIAL is not something to upload to a free web service on the way to becoming confidential.

Nothing is uploaded

The document and your logo are read and stamped inside the browser tab. Neither reaches a server.

Text or image, your settings

Stamp a word or your own logo, at the angle, transparency and position you choose.

Text stays sharp

A text watermark is drawn with real PDF fonts, so it stays crisp at any zoom instead of blurring like a stamped image.

How to watermark a PDF

1

Open the PDF you want to mark.

2

Type your text or upload a logo image.

3

Set the angle, transparency and position.

4

Download the watermarked document.

The document you are marking never leaves your device

There is an obvious tension in uploading a document to a stranger's server in order to stamp CONFIDENTIAL on it. Here the marking happens in your own browser, so the file and your logo both stay put.

When people reach for this

Marking a draft so it is not mistaken for final

A contract circulating for comment looks exactly like a signed one once printed. DRAFT across every page removes any chance of the wrong version being acted on.

Labelling confidential material

Marking a document CONFIDENTIAL sets expectations for anyone who opens it, and in many organisations is a required part of handling classified information.

Tracing who a copy went to

Stamping each recipient's name onto their own copy means a leaked document identifies its source. It is a mild deterrent that costs nothing to apply.

Branding a document you are sending out

A proposal or a report with your logo across the page arrives looking deliberate, and stays identifiable if a single page is forwarded on its own.

What actually happens to your file

The PDF is loaded in your browser with pdf-lib. For a text watermark, one of the standard PDF fonts is embedded — the fourteen fonts every reader is guaranteed to have — so nothing about the appearance depends on what is installed on the recipient's machine.

For an image watermark, your logo is embedded with the encoder matching its format: PNG images keep their transparency, which is why a logo with a transparent background sits properly over the page rather than arriving in a white box.

The transparency slider is applied as an opacity value on the drawing operation, and the angle you chose is applied as a rotation in degrees. Both are properties of how the mark is drawn, not a filter applied afterwards.

The watermark is then drawn onto each page's existing content stream, at coordinates derived from that page's own dimensions so the placement holds whether the pages are A4, Letter or something irregular. The underlying content is not re-rendered — the mark is added on top of it, which is why the document's text stays selectable and its images keep their quality.

What a watermark does and does not do

  • It is not a security control. A watermark is page content, and anyone determined enough can cover it, crop around it or rebuild the document without it. It signals intent and deters casual misuse; it does not enforce anything.
  • It cannot be removed by this tool afterwards. Once stamped, the mark is part of the page. Keep an unwatermarked original.
  • It sits on top of your content. A dark or opaque mark over dense text makes the document harder to read, and over a scanned page it can obscure detail. Lower the transparency until the document is still comfortable to read.
  • Text watermarks use only the standard PDF fonts, so you cannot match a distinctive brand typeface. For that, upload a logo image instead.
  • The same mark, at the same position, is applied to every page. There is no per-page variation.
  • Encrypted documents must be unlocked first, since their pages cannot be modified while encrypted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the watermark be removed?expand_more
Not by this tool, and not easily by casual means — but it is page content, so someone determined can cover it, crop around it or rebuild the document. Treat it as a clear label and a deterrent, not as protection. If you need the file itself protected, encrypt it with the protect tool.
Will it make my document hard to read?expand_more
It can, if the mark is too dark or too opaque. The transparency setting exists for exactly this: lower it until the watermark is unmistakable but the text beneath is still comfortable to read.
Can I use my own logo?expand_more
Yes. Upload a PNG or JPG. PNG is the better choice because its transparency is preserved, so a logo with a transparent background sits over the page rather than in a white rectangle.
Is the watermark an image or real text?expand_more
A text watermark is drawn as real text with a standard PDF font, so it stays sharp at any zoom and adds almost nothing to the file size. An image watermark is embedded as the image you supplied.
Does watermarking degrade the document?expand_more
No. The mark is drawn onto each page's existing content stream and nothing underneath is re-rendered. Your text stays selectable and your images keep their original quality.
Can I put a different mark on different pages?expand_more
No. The same watermark, position and settings apply across the whole document. Splitting the file and watermarking the parts separately is the workaround.
Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?expand_more
Not while it is encrypted. Unlock it with the password first, mark the decrypted copy, then re-protect it if you need to.
